Chef d'oeuvre.
La direction de Lang (au pic de sa carrière américaine) est géniale avec un scénario (de Nunnaly Johnson) qui vaut son pesant d'or et sa fin innatendue (qui fut critiquée). Un scénario hitchcockien à bien des égards.
La photographie (Milton R. Krasner) en noir et blanc est superbe et apporte beaucoup au film.
Quant aux acteurs, Edward G. Robinson est magistral. La belle Joan Bennett tournait son 2e film avec Fritz Lang (après Man Hunt). Les seconds coûteaux sont bien joués par Dan Dureya et Raymond Massey.

Un film noir magistral. A ne pas manquer !

La femme au portrait a beaucoup de points communs avec La Rue Rouge sorti un an après réutilisant les trois acteurs principaux et Lang.
